... just like the girl that married dear old dad.

I read the following quote in Josh Marshall's blog. If David Seaton had written the following he would have been crucified.
If I were a completely amoral Republican operative, I'd try to find some white women that Obama dated before Michelle and get them into the public's stream of consciousness anyway I could. Its a tactic so vile I don't even like speculating about it, but if you want to be ready for the worst, I think Rove just tipped his hand at where they plan to go. -- David Kurtz
Is this the "conversation" about race that Obama suggested?

Look, if you read me you may have gathered that I think Barack Obama is a fraud, but the last thing I would ever criticize him for is for dating white women. First because it is nobody's business who he ever dated before he got married and second... One of his biggest selling points is that he is bi-racial.

His mother was a white woman f'krisesake! If he found white women unattractive that would be abnormal.

A person's mother in great part determines their relations with all women thereafter. I think this reaction is as true for girls as it is for boys. Mothers form a person's taste in women.

For example, when I was a little kid my late mother was a drop dead redhead with big hooters and I have been happily married to a drop dead redhead with big hooters nigh on to thirty years. But on the other hand my momma was a lousy housekeeper and her messy house embarrassed me with my school friends and so consequently I married a German who is obsessed by domestic cleanliness.... both have/had fantastic senses of humor. My wife is that rarity, a sexy clown.

Moral: mothers are mined and cherry picked for qualities and defects. What a son chooses in women is a judgment of his mother.

Really, in Obama's case the interesting psychobabble point is why somebody who was raised by white women is not married to a white woman himself. I think it was Konrad Lorenz who had all these baby geese following him around because he was the first thing they saw when they hatched and they thought he was their mother.

So, if you are an amateur psychologist (and what American isn't) and you really wanted to delve into Barack Obama's psyche and come up with nuggets of insight into his character, you would begin to study the similarities and differences between Stanley Ann Dunham and Michelle Robinson and I am sure the differences are much more than "skin deep".

An example: both are very well educated women, but Michelle is a very together and responsible mother and very rooted in her community...

You could play this game at cocktail parties from now till the inauguration ball.

I am not at all sure it would do Obama any harm politically: quite the contrary, it has all the human interest, soap opera, telenovela quality infused with pseudo-intellectualism that Americans find irresistible... Me included. DS

I may lack the imagination of some, but I'm fairly certain that Rove is trying to frame Obama as an elitist, liberal, and unpatriotic intellectual(!). This ploy has worked for Bush in the past and it is annoyingly effective. Obama may have his truth-seekers, but I wonder if they are as organized and effective as their Republican counterparts.

David -- aren't you glad you don't live in America anymore?

Nader has just accused Obama of "talking white". His point was that Obama is moving rightward and never was very leftist anyway, but you can hear the rhetoric -- he is not white, and wants to be; he is not fulfilling the role that blacks are supposed to play, etc.

Despite the elimination of (most) overt racism, race consciousness colors everything in this country. So Obama gets portrayed both as the elite/academic/ivory tower/naive/egghead and as the scary macho black man who wants to sleep with your (white) daughter. Yes, they are inconsistent; Obama has crafted his campaign image to run away from both images. He was a college professor but instead of giving reasoned speaches, he now preaches; he did not respond to personal attacks since responding might make him look like a scary angry (black) man.

He will be elected. Partly because he knows how to craft his image.

He will be elected.

It's a long way to November.

Barack Obama is a very complex individual, and his color seems to simplify him for many people... Mostly in his favor. This is an immense mistake... his color is only a disguise, that uses America's race obsessions to make Obama's true nature "invisible".

My reading of him is that he is a closet megalomaniac of nearly insane proportions and hopefully, during this long campaign, he will be drawn out of his closet and his self-created myth exploded.

The important thing is for the Democrats to have huge majorities in both houses... but I think it would be sinister and tragic if that kind of power were put in the hands of Barack Obama.

In addition to Michelle Obama’s many fine personal qualities, she was also as perfect and even more crucial a political choice for her husband as Jacqueline Bouvier was for John Kennedy.

I understand Obama did date white girls, and why the hell not, but could he have married one and had political viability? (I think it’s okay for black Republicans, those hardy few, to marry white women – Edward Brooke’s first wife was Italian – but for an African-American Democrat, especially one with as singular a background as Obama? It might have been fatal.)

Stephanie,
A very shrewd comment!

Instead of the Democrats being in the majority in both houses of Congress and keeping a lid on McCain, I expect that they will be doing that for Obama. Then again, between shooting themselves in the foot and then placing that foot in their mouths, the Democrats may not be all that great at running anything. But they are in luck because they face the hated Republicans and so, like forensic, I think they will win.

I think the Democrats are going to win both houses and if they have a sufficient majority to override McCain's veto than much progressive legislation will be passed.

If however this instrument is placed in the hands of Barack Obama than little that is progressive will happen because his obsession will be to get re-elected in 2012, we can already see the writing on the wall.
